Beginner’s Guide to Sustainability: Swapping Your Body Care!
Hey! Another day, another newsletter from yours truly ✨
If you’re just starting your sustainability journey, let’s talk about why swapping your body care products for sustainable alternatives is a game-changer!
I’ve been there—buying trendy skincare and body care products with fancy packaging that ended up in the trash. But after my “eco-awakening” (what I like to call it), I discovered a world of sustainable skin & body care that’s not only better for the planet but also for my skin. Let me share what I’ve learned and how you can make the switch too!
The Problem with Conventional Body Care
Most body care products today come in packaging that’s a nightmare for the environment. Think plastic mixed with aluminum or other materials that can’t be recycled. Once you’re done with the product, the packaging ends up in landfills, polluting our planet. It’s a cycle of waste that’s hard to break—unless you start looking for sustainable alternatives.
Why Sustainable Body Care Matters
Sustainable body care products focus on what’s inside, not the packaging. Sure, they might not look as “sexy” or Instagram-worthy, but they’re often made with high-quality, non-toxic ingredients that are better for your skin and the planet. Plus, many brands use reusable, compostable, or recyclable packaging, so you’re not contributing to landfill waste.
My Sustainable Swap Checklist
Here’s how I evaluate the sustainability of body care products:
Certifications: Look for certifications like vegan, cruelty-free, or eco-friendly. Small businesses might not have them due to cost, but larger companies should.
Mission: Does the brand care about the environment? Check their website for sustainability commitments.
Recycling Programs: Some brands offer recycling programs for their packaging. This is a big plus.
Refill Options: Many sustainable brands have refill programs to reduce waste.
Packaging Materials: Opt for products in glass, cardboard, or recycled plastics.
Ingredient Sourcing: Are ingredients like shea butter sustainably sourced? Avoid products with microplastics or toxic chemicals.
Vegan & Cruelty-Free: If you’re vegan like me, this is a must.
Benefits of Sustainable Body Care
Switching to sustainable body care has been a game-changer for me. Here’s why:
Reusable Packaging: Glass bottles can be repurposed for dish soap, vases, or storage.
Low Waste: Products like bar soap leave little to no waste.
Better Skin: Sustainable products focus on quality ingredients, which have improved my skin more than expensive mainstream brands.
Cost-Effective: Without the fancy packaging, sustainable products are often cheaper.
How to Start Your Sustainable Swap
Don’t feel overwhelmed! Start small. Swap one product at a time—maybe a sustainable soap or lotion. Gradually, you’ll build a routine that’s both eco-friendly and effective. I’ve created a Sustainable Swap Guide with my top recommendations to help you get started. It’s free to download, and I’ve even listed body care as the first section because it’s such an important place to start!
Brands I Enjoy
One brand that stands out is Bathing Culture. Their mission and product quality left a lasting impression on me. Another is Wild, though they’ve recently been bought out by a controversial company. I’m still using their deodorant till I use it up but, I hope their commitment to sustainability remains strong.
Staying Motivated on Your Journey
Social media can make sustainable products seem less appealing compared to trendy, aesthetically pleasing options. My advice? Limit your time on social media and unfollow influencers who promote overconsumption. Instead, follow sustainable creators who inspire mindful choices.
Final Thoughts
Incorporating sustainable swaps into your routine doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small, stay informed, and remember that every choice matters. Together, we can make a difference—one sustainable swap at a time.
